Meebits are non-fungible tokens of algorithmically generated 3D-voxel characters that exist on the Ethereum blockchain.

The appearance of the 20,000 characters in the Meebits NFT collection are inspired by Minecraft characters. They can be broken down into seven basic types such as humans, pigs and skeletons. Each NFT has a number of varying traits like tattoos, hats and glasses. The different traits across Meebits ensure each is a one-of-a-kind character with provably unique qualities.

Meebits can be used as profile pictures (PFPs) on social media and as avatars in the metaverse. The OBJ file included with each NFT means they can also easily be 3D-printed by holders looking to add a physical piece of art to their collection.

Who created Meebits?

Meebits was created in May 2021 by Larva Labs — the team behind CryptoPunks, Autoglyphs and other innovative projects uniting the worlds of digital art and technology.

Larva Labs, founded by Matt Hall and John Watkinson, has been involved in projects inside and outside the crypto industry for several years. The team is best known for their groundbreaking NFT series, CryptoPunks. Since CryptoPunks’ launch in 2017, it has become one of the most recognized and highest-value NFT collections to date.

Larva Labs created Meebits to expand on the success of CryptoPunks’ and Autoglyphs’ 2D-pixel aesthetic with a 3D-voxel collection purpose-built for emerging metaverse games such as Decentraland and The Sandbox.

In March 2022, Yuga Labs, the team behind the wildly popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection (and its many spin-off collections) acquired the intellectual property (IP) rights for both CryptoPunks and Meebits from the Larva Labs team.

What makes Meebits unique?

Meebits draw from the pixelated, low-res graphic aesthetic popularized by games like Minecraft and Roblox. The 3D-voxel character collection is positioned to serve as an ownable avatar purpose-built for immersive virtual reality environments.

Meebits of varying type, attribute and rarity can be bought, sold and collected. The most common type, human, makes up 18,881 of the Meebits, while the rarest type, dissected, makes up only five of 20,000 Meebits. The types, in order of descending rarity, are: dissected, visitor, skeleton, robot, elephant, pig and human.

Along with these seven types, different attribute categories (tattoos, jersey numbers, earrings, necklaces, beards, etc.) make each Meebit distinct and should help prospective buyers find the right Meebit for them.

Meebit owners also receive an asset pack which includes the full 3D model, a T-pose animation OBJ file and high-resolution renders of the Meebit. Meebit owners can further customize and play with their Meebit character in various games and virtual worlds in the metaverse or even 3D print a physical model.

Meebits has its own integrated marketplace which allows reduced-fee trading on up to 100 Meebits at a time. Within the Meebits marketplace, trades can be proposed off-chain via the Meebits Trading Terminal. Fees are only incurred upon the finalization of the proposed trades, which requires an on-chain transaction (and gas fees) between the seller and buyer.

Why buy Meebits?

Considering Larva Labs has launched multiple successful NFT projects, Meebits may appeal to those who want to participate in another NFT collection from the acclaimed group. The Meebits collection immediately proved to be a popular, with the initial public release selling out in hours.

The Meebits collection has drawn a loyal community of NFT enthusiasts from the start. Free Meebits were mintable by owners of CryptoPunks and Autoglyphs upon release, and the MeebitsDAO continues to develop the community and ecosystem.

Those interested in collecting unique NFTs with rare traits can explore the 20,000 Meebits to find a character that meets their needs. Others may believe unique, on-chain, 3D-voxel characters have yet-untapped potential for use in video games and virtual environments. For those buyers, owning a Meebits may be an intriguing opportunity to further immerse themselves in metaverse experiences.

What makes Meebits valuable?

Meebits can serve as unique avatars in the metaverse on platforms like Decentraland or The Sandbox. As the metaverse and the unique experiences it enables continue to develop, there will likely be a growing demand for ownable avatars (such as Meetbits) for gamers and collectors to use in these environments. Meebits also serve as unique and easily recognizable characters for social media profile images or in-game avatars.

High-profile Meebits owners reportedly include Snoop Doog and Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit. Each has an extensive collection of other premier NFTs as well.

There are 20,000 unique Meebits characters, all of which are algorithmically generated and registered on Ethereum. Given the track record of past Larva Labs collections like CryptoPunks, many are interested in seeing how past successes and lessons learned from launching that collection may be used while continuing to develop the Meebits project. With double the number of tokens in this collection than in CryptoPunks, Meebits also offers more opportunities for interested buyers to join the community.

The Meebits decentralized autonomous organization, MeebitsDAO, continues to develop the Meebits ecosystem with community input. These developments include creating animations, increasing cross-platform interoperability of Meebits models and enacting decisions of the MeebitsDAO.
