How Krak compares to Monzo, Revolut and Wise on foreign ATM withdrawals

Below, we compare the (free) tiers of leading UK card providers, assuming a week abroad with four ATM withdrawals (at £200 per, totalling £800 in non-GBP currency).

What's immediately clear here is how expensive the popular “fixed withdrawal” model can be. Users of platforms with a fixed number of withdrawals or limited GBP amount need to be cautious in their activities to avoid racking up fees.

Indeed, restrictive ATM withdrawal caps aren't all you need to watch out for: FX fees can kick in when you withdraw abroad (but not for Krak):

All in, these seemingly minuscule percentages can add up, resulting in double-digit fees on withdrawals.

While these limits can be raised with paid plans from other providers, few actually remove them altogether. Krak delivers a worthy, free alternative which caters to even the most frequent of travellers — with only Mastercard’s fee charged.

FAQs

Withdrawal limits depend on your region and local currency. You can check your current limits via the app.

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is an option an ATM provider or point-of-sale device will sometimes provide when you go to withdraw cash or make a payment abroad. It will allow you to pay directly in the native currency (i.e., GBP) rather than the foreign one.

This may seem convenient, but it rarely is: you’re subject to the conversion fees of this device, which are often higher than if you just pay in the foreign currency (where you’ll get the Mastercard rate, without markups).

Provided an ATM supports Mastercard, it can be used. Note, however, that third-party machines may charge a fee, even though we don't.
