Key takeaways 🔑
  1. Both platforms give you access to crypto, stocks, ETFs, staking, self-custody and payments, but the depth of each platform’s offering differs sharply, as does each one’s approach to security and support.

  2. Kraken lets you trade 600+ cryptocurrencies alongside 11,000+ US-listed stocks and ETFs, compared with around 90 cryptocurrencies on Robinhood in the US, and it pays competitive rewards on the assets you hold.

  3. Leverage is available to you as a US trader on Kraken: spot margin up to 20x and CFTC-regulated perpetual futures on Kraken Pro. Robinhood’s crypto is non-marginable, and its perpetual futures are offered only outside the US.

  4. Kraken publishes Proof of Reserves, which cryptographically verifies that your assets are backed 1:1, while Robinhood relies on audited financial statements. Kraken pioneered Proof of Reserves in 2014, and it has since become an industry-wide transparency standard.

  5. Kraken serves 190+ countries and maintains licenses around the world so you can use its products under your local regulations, while Robinhood’s full product suite is concentrated in the US, UK, EEA and Canada.

An intro to both platforms

Trading and investing platforms are the financial foundation for millions of people worldwide. The one you choose shapes what you can buy, how you can trade it, and how safely your assets are held.

Whether you are trading on spot, margin or derivatives markets, staking crypto to earn rewards, or venturing into the world of DEXs, DeFi and DAOs, it all starts with your first cash deposit on an exchange.

Different venues offer different features, workflows and assets. When you are making a decision about your own financial freedom, it is worth weighing the facts yourself.

Kraken overview

Established in 2011, Kraken is one of the longest-operating crypto exchanges, and no Kraken-managed custodial wallet has ever been breached in that time. But today, Kraken offers far more than a crypto exchange alone, with stocks, ETFs, futures and reward products accessible from the all-in-one platform.

Fifteen years in, Kraken has built a product line that ranges from a one-tap buy mobile app, through to Kraken Prime and an OTC desk for institutions. Across each of those products, Kraken set the standard for exchange transparency with Proof of Reserves, which it pioneered in 2014.

You can buy and hold 600+ cryptocurrencies, trade 11,000+ US stocks and ETFs in the same account, run leveraged strategies with perpetual futures on Kraken Pro, earn rewards on up to 26 assets through staking, or spend and send money globally with Krak.

Kraken also lets you buy more than your cash balance allows, without selling assets from your portfolio to fund the purchase, using Kraken Borrow.

In 2025, Kraken handled roughly $2.0 trillion in platform transaction volume and acquired NinjaTrader, bringing regulated US derivatives in-house. The result is a full suite of regulated trading and investing products across traditional equities and digital assets.

Robinhood overview

Robinhood launched in 2013 as a mobile-first, zero-commission platform for stocks and ETFs, and went public in 2021. It added crypto in 2018 and has expanded aggressively since, acquiring Bitstamp in 2025 and WonderFi in 2026, launching an Ethereum layer-2 network, and building out prediction markets, which in Q2 2026 generated more revenue than its crypto business.

Robinhood is known for a polished trading app and for making investing feel approachable. Its crypto offering has matured considerably since 2024, and it now sits closer to the core of the product than the edge. Robinhood remains a broker that added crypto rather than a crypto platform that expanded into traditional finance, and that heritage shows in asset selection, leverage and product depth.

Why people choose Kraken over Robinhood

On Kraken, you get more assets to trade, more ways to trade them, and a security record you can independently check. If your portfolio spans several asset types and financial products, that combination tends to matter.

Kraken products and features

Kraken pairs accessible interfaces with genuinely deep trading tools, so the platform grows with you rather than capping out. If you are just getting started, you can use Kraken as an approachable, intuitive way to invest and save.

If you are a more experienced trader who needs more powerful tools, you can access Kraken Pro from the same login and use every advanced feature it offers.

If you want an easy way to build a multi-asset portfolio, or you want to take control of an active multi-asset strategy on Kraken Pro, there is a product that fits.

If you are still building your understanding of how leverage and collateral work before you use margin, our full guide covers the mechanics from the ground up.

Beyond core trading, four newer products are worth knowing about:

  • Kraken Borrow: buy more crypto without selling what you already hold, using your existing assets as collateral.
  • Kraken Funded and Kraken Prop: prove your edge in an evaluation, then trade Kraken’s capital and keep the majority of what you make. Kraken Funded starts at a $1,000 account for a $20 fee with an 80% profit split, and Kraken Prop scales to a $200,000 wallet with up to a 90% split across 60+ pairs.
  • Krak: send money to 160+ countries, hold 600+ currencies, earn rewards on your everyday balance and spend on a card with up to 2% back. Transfers between Krak users are free through a Kraktag handle, with no IBAN or routing number needed.
  • Earn: collect rewards on cash, stablecoins and cryptocurrencies, on both flexible and bonded terms.

From trading US stocks and ETFs commission-free to accumulating crypto with recurring buys and earning rewards on an idle cash balance, one login covers your full investing strategy on Kraken.

What is crypto margin trading?
Borrow funds to trade spot with leverage and understand margin calls and liquidation risk.

Robinhood products and features

Robinhood has built out its multi-asset trading capabilities considerably in recent years. Robinhood Legend gives desktop traders real charting and order types, Cortex adds AI-generated market digests, and agentic trading lets AI agents place orders through an official interface. Its self-custody wallet supports nine networks, and its own Ethereum layer-2 network went live in July 2026.

The gaps are structural rather than cosmetic. Crypto on Robinhood is explicitly non-marginable, which means you cannot use it as collateral and margin buying power cannot purchase it. Perpetual futures reach up to 10x, but only for eligible customers in the EU, and Robinhood does not offer a US crypto perps product. Staking in the US covers three assets (ETH, SOL and ADA) at a 25% commission on rewards.

Robinhood Wallet swaps are also no longer free. After the platform’s gas-fee promotion ended in late September 2026, same-chain and cross-chain swaps carry a swap fee plus network and provider costs, so the all-in price depends on the route your swap takes.

Why people choose Kraken over Robinhood

You get to run the strategy you actually want. That means leverage available where you live rather than only in the EU, 26 stakeable assets instead of three, and the option to borrow against your crypto or trade with funded capital, none of which has a Robinhood equivalent.

Kraken supported assets

Kraken lists 600+ tokens and keeps adding. Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) sit alongside an ever-growing selection of memecoins, utility tokens, governance tokens and other emerging assets. You can track what is coming next on the public listings roadmap.

On the fiat side, major currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY and CHF are supported, and a broad stablecoin lineup bridges cash and crypto.

In the US you can also trade 11,000+ stocks and ETFs commission-free (other fees apply), so you can hold Nvidia, Tesla and Apple next to your full crypto stack in one portfolio view. Outside the US, xStocks gives you tokenized access to 100+ companies, trading 24/5, backed 1:1 and withdrawable to your own wallet.

If you want to understand how earning rewards on the assets you hold actually works before you start, our staking guide walks through the mechanics.

What is crypto staking?
Learn how staking earns rewards, how validators function, and what to know before you start.

Robinhood supported assets

Robinhood’s crypto selection has grown substantially, reaching 90 assets in the US, 98 in the EU and 53 in the UK through Bitstamp. That covers the major names and the better-known memecoins, though it remains a fraction of Kraken’s list.

Like Kraken, Robinhood supports 11,000+ stocks and ETFs commission-free. Fiat is limited to the regions it operates in, chiefly USD, EUR and GBP. Stablecoin support is narrow: USDC and USDG in the US, and USDC and EURC in the EU.

Why people choose Kraken over Robinhood

You are not waiting for a listing. With 600+ tokens and a published roadmap, the asset you want is far more likely to already be there, and if it is not yet, you can see it coming.

Kraken fees and pricing

On Kraken Pro, spot fees start at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker and fall across 17 tiers to 0.00% maker and 0.05% taker. Kraken sets your rate on the better of your 30-day volume or your total assets on the platform, so you do not have to trade constantly to move off the entry tier.

If you buy and hold rather than trade actively, Kraken+ removes trading fees entirely on up to $10,000 per month of Buy, Sell and Convert orders for $4.99 a month, and pays boosted stablecoin rewards of up to 3.75% APR. Spreads and payment processing fees still apply.

Most crypto and fiat deposit options are free. Where an activity does carry a cost, the fee is shown before you confirm, in line with Kraken’s no-hidden-fee policy.

Robinhood fees and pricing

Robinhood prices crypto differently depending on where you are and how your order is routed, so the headline commission-free framing needs unpacking.

  • US, default routing: orders placed in the app and on web classic go to a market maker with no stated commission. The cost sits in the spread. As of mid-2026, Robinhood receives about $0.95 for every $100 of notional traded.
  • US, exchange routing: orders on Legend, the mobile ladder and API v2 use a published maker/taker schedule starting at 0.95% taker and 0.50% maker, falling toward 0.03% and 0.00% at $25M+ in 30-day volume. Only exchange-routed orders count toward that volume.
  • EU: a flat 0.50% on both sides, with no volume tiers. EURC transactions are free.
  • UK: no trading fee, but every crypto order executes in USD, so you pay a currency conversion cost of 0.10% on weekday GBP conversions and 0.30% at weekends and on US holidays.

Robinhood Gold, at $5 a month, provides no crypto trading discount in 2026. Its benefits sit in equities, cash sweep and the credit card.

Why people choose Kraken over Robinhood

You can see what you are paying. Kraken publishes one maker/taker schedule that applies to your orders, and it lets your holdings, not just your trading frequency, earn you a better rate. If you buy and hold, Kraken+ takes the trading fee to zero on up to $10,000 a month.

Kraken security and custody

Both Kraken and Robinhood are centralized platforms, which means each one takes custody of your assets on your behalf. That makes how a platform secures and proves its holdings the central security question.

Fifteen years in, no Kraken-managed custodial wallet has ever been breached. You can verify your own funds rather than take that on faith: Proof of Reserves lets you cryptographically confirm that your balance is included in reserves that an independent accounting firm has verified.

The June 30, 2026 snapshot showed BTC at 102.9%, ETH at 100.5%, SOL at 100.6% and XRP at 102.3% of client holdings.

On your side of the account, you can lock things down with two-factor authentication, FIDO2 passkeys, withdrawal address allowlisting, a global settings lock and PGP-encrypted email. Kraken does not use SMS for account recovery. Behind the scenes, the majority of assets sit in offline cold storage in guarded facilities, backed by real-time threat monitoring, a bug bounty program and a dedicated Kraken Security Labs team.

Kraken holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 attestations, PCI DSS v4.0.1 and the Cryptocurrency Security Standard. Reports are available through the Kraken trust center.

If you are weighing how a centralized platform holds your assets against holding them yourself, our guide to custodial and non-custodial wallets breaks down the trade-offs.

Custodial vs. non-custodial wallets: Who holds your crypto?
In custodial wallets, private keys are managed by third parties. Non-custodial wallets give you more control.

Robinhood security and custody

Robinhood requires step-up verification on new devices, offers authenticator-app and SMS two-factor authentication, and supports passkeys on iOS. Withdrawal address allowlisting is available with a 48-hour delay on new addresses. Crypto is held using multi-party computation and hardware security, and Robinhood states that it does not lend out customer crypto.

Two points are worth knowing before you decide. Robinhood does not publish Proof of Reserves or any reserve attestation, so its backing is described in its financial filings rather than made independently verifiable by customers. It also does not publicly advertise ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification for its crypto operation.

If you want a plain-English primer on what custody means and why it matters for platform risk, our custody explainer covers it.

What is crypto custody?
Taking custody of your crypto means securing your private keys. Find out how to manage custody.

Why people choose Kraken over Robinhood

Kraken’s impeccable track record speaks for itself, and clients clearly value the peace of mind that comes with a crypto partner laser-focused on protecting their funds.

But while the exchange prioritizes security above all else, it doesn’t slack on the quality of its products and services. Kraken aids millions in confidently navigating the crypto universe, safe in the knowledge that their digital assets are secured by the best in the business.

Kraken offers a well-rounded customer support system, making its award-winning team of agents available to clients via online chat, email or phone. It has been recognized multiple times at the European Customer Centricity Awards for its exceptional service, which offers support in 13+ languages.

Robinhood customer support

Robinhood, too, offers support via chat, email and phone support, albeit only in English.

It has previously been criticized for the quality of its support, with complaints citing the length of time taken for account issues to get resolved.

You reach a person when you need one, in your language, whatever the hour, whether you are making your first BTC purchase or working through an unexpected life event.

Kraken vs Robinhood: what is the bottom line?

Both platforms are credible, well-resourced places to buy crypto, stocks and ETFs, and both have grown well beyond where they were a year ago. The honest answer to which is right for you depends on your strategy.

Robinhood may suit you if you are primarily a stocks and ETFs investor who wants some crypto exposure in the same mobile app, and you value a simple interface over product depth. Its equities offering is strong and its app has genuinely changed the way many people access financial markets.

Kraken may suit you if you want all the stock-trading flexibility Robinhood offers, without compromising on crypto selection or reward opportunities. You get the same equities alongside 600+ cryptocurrencies rather than 90, a compliant way to access leverage, dozens of staking and reward options, and the ability to borrow against your holdings.

If you want to manage your complete financial portfolio inside a single platform, Kraken’s all-in-one functionality is a clear differentiator. You can hold 600+ cryptocurrencies and 11,000+ US stocks in one account, verify your own backing through Proof of Reserves, and act on everything you have just read without leaving the platform.

It depends on how much you want to do with crypto. Kraken supports 600+ cryptocurrencies, leverage for eligible US traders, staking rewards on up to 26 assets and Proof of Reserves you can verify yourself. Robinhood supports around 90 cryptocurrencies in the US inside a simpler app, with no US crypto leverage and staking limited to three assets. If crypto depth, leverage or rewards matter to you, Kraken offers more; if you want light crypto exposure beside your stocks, Robinhood is straightforward.

Kraken lists 600+ cryptocurrencies and publishes a listings roadmap of what is coming next. Robinhood offers around 90 in the US, 98 in the EU and 53 in the UK through Bitstamp. Both platforms also offer 11,000+ US-listed stocks and ETFs commission-free (other fees apply).

Kraken offers US traders spot margin of up to 20x and CFTC-regulated perpetual futures through Kraken Pro. Robinhood’s crypto is non-marginable in the US, and its perpetual futures are available only to eligible customers outside the US, currently in the EU at up to 10x.

Both are centralized platforms that take custody of your assets, so security comes down to controls and proof. Kraken publishes Proof of Reserves that lets you cryptographically confirm your balance is backed 1:1, and it reports no breach of a Kraken-managed custodial wallet since 2011. Robinhood uses multi-party computation and hardware security and states that it does not lend out customer crypto, but it does not publish a reserve attestation you can independently verify.

Kraken Pro publishes a single maker/taker schedule starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker and falling to 0.00% and 0.05%, and Kraken+ removes trading fees on up to $10,000 a month of Buy, Sell and Convert orders for $4.99 a month. Robinhood advertises commission-free crypto, but its real cost is in the spread on default US orders (about $0.95 per $100 traded as of mid-2026) or a separate maker/taker schedule on exchange-routed orders.
