Top memecoins worth watching in 2025
Memecoins are digital assets that pay homage to internet memes, trends, animals or objects.
Though they’ve been around for over a decade, the past couple of years have seen an explosion in their popularity.
While highly volatile, memecoins are often seen as a great way for new users to get involved in various crypto communities.
A guide on popular memecoins 🐶
In 2024, no topic dominated the crypto conversation quite like that of memecoins: the ostensibly “useless” tokens based around satirical themes. This boom signified a notable shift from the usual crypto playbook, which has traditionally emphasized token utility.
Memecoins, conversely, are concerned with community. Their goal is to resonate with users, who will go on to become brand ambassadors—creating content around the token, participating in community channels and promoting the memecoin to their networks.
As we’ll see shortly, this direction has yielded tremendous results among certain projects. Let’s dive into some of the top memecoin examples.
Trending memecoins ✅
Dogecoin (DOGE)
The undisputed king of memecoins, Dogecoin was launched in 2013, based on the viral meme of a Shiba Inu dog. Its developers felt that cryptocurrency was being taken too seriously, and that it lacked fun.
They decided to launch a new parody cryptocurrency with a huge token supply of 100 billion coins and a randomized block reward; two features that were subsequently removed once the project took off.
Dogecoin blew up within weeks of launching, owing much of its success to Reddit adoption. It didn’t take long for a passionate community to develop around the coin, with a focus on charitable endeavors such as funding the Jamaican bobsleigh team’s trip to the Olympics, or building clean-water wells in Kenya.
In January 2025, Dogecoin boasted a market capitalization of over $50 billion, earning it a place among the top 10 largest cryptocurrencies.
Shiba Inu (SHIB)
Interestingly, the second-biggest memecoin by market capitalization draws significant inspiration from Dogecoin. Like its precursor, it’s also based on a Shiba Inu dog.
Its largely anonymous team originally launched SHIB as an experiment in community building. However, following its rapid adoption in 2021, the team developed a suite of new products, services and additional tokens to expand the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
In January 2025, Shiba Inu was ranked as the 19th largest cryptocurrency by market cap, with a total value of over $10 billion.
Pepe (PEPE)
Launched on the Ethereum blockchain in 2023, Pepe is a memecoin based on one of the best-known Internet memes: Matt Furie’s Pepe the Frog.
Like many in the category, it has no tangible roadmap—but that hasn’t stopped it from cementing a place as one of the top memecoins and, indeed, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies overall.
At the time of this writing, it ranks 31st in market capitalization across all categories of cryptocurrency.
The key features of leading memecoins 👀
As previously mentioned, the top memecoins are those with the strongest communities (we’ll discuss this shortly). However, this isn’t all that successful entrants in the category have in common.
High supply
Memecoins tend to boast very high token supplies. This typically results in a low per-unit price, which in turn makes the token more appealing to prospective buyers—the rationale being that they can acquire a lot of tokens relatively cheaply.
Consider Floki (FLOKI), for example: even at its all-time high, the coin’s price hasn’t surpassed the $0.001 mark. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has traded at over $100,000 per coin. To a new crypto market participant, it may be more satisfying to spend $10 and receive 10,000+ FLOKI tokens than to receive 0.0001 BTC.
Burned LP
When it comes to memecoin tokens (which piggyback on an existing blockchain) versus cryptocurrencies (which are the native currency of their own chain), there’s a specific type of risk: that of the rug pull.
Because it’s so easy to launch a token, scams are rife. In a rug pull, the issuer hypes their own token to raise the price, before abruptly removing all liquidity from the pool—which tanks the value of the tokens held by unsuspecting investors.
For transparency, issuers can instead opt to burn the liquidity provider: the token that would allow them to pull such a stunt. By doing so, they can build trust with the community and demonstrate their commitment to the project.
The market performance of popular memecoins 🧐
Over the past year, memecoins have performed very well, with the YOY appreciation of the category’s top ten coming in anywhere between 95% (BONK) and 1,360% (PEPE). Indeed, DWF Labs reports an increase in total memecoin market capitalization of 500% between January-December.
The above information should be taken with a grain of salt. Memecoins are highly volatile, and price increases or decreases are usually heavily influenced by macro market movements. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other large-caps enjoyed a strong year in 2024, which is potentially why memecoins performed well over the same period.
Community influence on memecoin success 📚
Remember: many memecoins have no underlying utility. They’re more akin to social currencies and, therefore, require attention to succeed.
The best way for these kinds of projects to generate momentum is by nurturing a strong community who will espouse the coin’s ethos across their own social networks—essentially, by leveraging community members’ as marketers. Doing so feeds a positive flywheel, where new community members raise awareness of the project to even more prospects.
New memecoins to watch 👀
The volatility of memecoins cannot be overstated. Memecoins are a high-risk play, and even the most rigorous of fundamental/technical analysis can be wrong—resulting in losses for investors.
In this section, we’ll cover some of the top picks for the memecoins to keep an eye on in 2025.
Dogwifhat (WIF)
An analysis by Brave New Coin eyes a recent memecoin success story as one to watch, the Solana-based Dogwifhat (WIF), which it suggests could hit historic all-time highs during a bull run.
Launched in December 2023, WIF hit a market capitalization of $4.5 billion in just under four months, owing largely to its community-driven ethos and virality across social platforms.
ai16z (AI16Z)
Other analysts have identified ai16z as a memecoin worth watching. Granted, it’s a little more ambitious than many others in the category, as the project aims to flesh out a framework for AI agents.
Launched in late 2024, ai16z started 2025 with a $2.5 billion market capitalization. Its memetic appeal and the project’s real-world utility have propelled it to the top of crypto investors’ watchlists.
Fartcoin (FARTCOIN)
Fartcoin may have a ridiculous premise, but it’s exactly the type of concept that can capture the attention of the crypto space. It hit an all-time high of $1.59 in early January, its market cap surpassing the billion-dollar mark. Pundits believe this to be a sign of things to come in 2025.
